What is a 240-volt circuit?
A 240-volt circuit uses two hot wires (or a hot wire and a neutral) to deliver power at double the voltage of standard 120V household circuits, supplying high-power appliances like water heaters and air conditioning units.
A 240-volt circuit carries electrical current at twice the voltage of a standard 120-volt line. Where household outlets typically run on 120V (using one hot wire and a neutral), a 240V circuit uses two hot wires carrying voltage in opposite phases, or one hot wire paired with a neutral in certain configurations. This doubled voltage allows the circuit to deliver substantially more power while drawing less current through the same wire gauge.
Most homes have a main service panel that splits power into both 120V and 240V circuits. The 240V lines branch to major appliances that consume significant energy over time: electric ranges and ovens, water heaters, clothes dryers, central air conditioning units, and heat pump systems. Some newer homes also run 240V to electric vehicle charging stations or pool equipment.
The wiring for 240V circuits differs in several ways. The breaker in the service panel must be a double-pole breaker rated for the specific amperage (commonly 30, 40, or 50 amps depending on the appliance). The wire itself is typically thicker gauge copper or aluminum to handle the current safely. Outlet configurations look distinctly different from standard receptacles: they feature different prong patterns and spacing to prevent accidental insertion of 120V plugs.
