What is a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker is an automatic switch that interrupts electrical current when it detects an overload or fault, protecting wiring and appliances from damage or fire.

A circuit breaker is an automatic electrical switch installed in your home's main panel that stops power from flowing to a circuit when dangerous conditions develop. When current exceeds safe levels-either from an overload (too many devices drawing power at once) or a short circuit (a dangerous unintended connection)-the breaker trips and cuts off electricity to that circuit, shutting down lights, outlets, or appliances on that line until the problem is fixed and the breaker is manually reset.

The key difference between a circuit breaker and an older fuse lies in reusability. A fuse melts when overcurrent flows through it and must be replaced each time it blows. A circuit breaker uses an internal mechanism (typically a bimetallic strip or magnetic coil) that bends or moves when current spikes, flipping a switch open without destroying itself. Once you address the overload, flip the breaker back on and it works again.

Circuit breakers protect both your home and its occupants. Without them, overheated wiring can cause fires, and dangerous faults could electrocute someone. Most modern homes have circuit breaker panels rather than fuse boxes. If your home still uses fuses or if you regularly experience breakers tripping in the same circuits, an electrician can evaluate whether your panel needs upgrades or repairs to handle your actual electrical load safely.
