What is a dedicated circuit?
A dedicated circuit is an electrical circuit that serves only one appliance or fixture, required by code for high-power devices to prevent overload and ensure safe operation.
A dedicated circuit is a branch circuit that runs from your main electrical panel directly to one appliance or fixture, with no other outlets or devices connected to it. Unlike general-purpose circuits that may serve multiple outlets in a room, a dedicated circuit provides power exclusively to a single load.
Certain high-amperage appliances require dedicated circuits by electrical code. These include electric ranges, clothes dryers, water heaters, central air conditioning units, and large capacity microwaves. Each of these draws significant current when operating, and sharing a circuit with other equipment risks overloading the breaker and creating a fire hazard. A dedicated circuit ensures the breaker is sized appropriately for that appliance's demand and that no other load interferes with its operation.
The wire gauge and breaker rating for a dedicated circuit must match the specific amperage requirements of the device it serves. An electric range might require a 40 or 50-amp circuit, while an HVAC system could need 30 amps. When installing new appliances or upgrading your home's electrical system, a residential electrician will verify that code-required appliances are on properly sized dedicated circuits.
