What is load calculation?
Load calculation is the process of determining a home's total electrical demand and sizing the electrical panel and circuits to safely handle that demand according to National Electrical Code rules.
A load calculation determines how much electrical power your home actually needs by adding up the demand from all circuits, appliances, heating and cooling systems, water heaters, and other equipment. An electrician uses this figure to size the main electrical panel, breakers, and individual circuits properly.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) sets minimum standards for load calculations based on square footage, the number of circuits required, and the amperage demands of specific equipment. For example, an electric range might draw 40-50 amps, an air conditioning unit 15-30 amps, and a water heater 30-40 amps. An electrician totals these demands (accounting for the fact that not every appliance runs simultaneously) to arrive at the minimum panel size your home needs.
Sizing is critical because an undersized panel cannot safely serve all your electrical needs and risks overheating, tripping breakers constantly, or creating fire hazards. An oversized panel wastes money on unnecessary capacity. Proper load calculations also determine how many circuits you need and what amperage each should carry, ensuring everything from outlets to dedicated appliances operates safely.
When upgrading your home's electrical system or adding major equipment like a new air conditioner or electric vehicle charger, electricians perform fresh load calculations to confirm your existing panel has capacity. If not, an electrical panel upgrade becomes necessary.
